Fifth Column: refers to any secret group of people which works covertly inside a nation to undermine its strength (psychological warfare) while the nation is simultaneously suffering an overt attack by a foreign power or another faction in a civil war.
This term was invented by General Emilio Mola during the Spanish Civil War in a radio broadcast on October 16, 1936, in which he said that he had una quinta columna ("a fifth column") of secret soldiers that were attempting to influence events while performing "behind enemy lines" in the city of Madrid that was being held captive. This fifth column would join the other four columns when the General attacked.
We belive in the 29th Chapter that our generation is in a state of spiritual civil war. Therefore as part of the Lord’s fifth column we are ‘attempting to influence events while perfoming behind enemy lines’. The bible says that the enemy roams the earth seeking who he may devour (1 Pt 5v8) and therefore as he is ‘the ruler of this earth’(John 14v30) have no doubt that as a born again, spirit filled follower of christ we are ‘behind enemy lines’.
Secret? Yes and no. We are not ashamed of our Lord’s Gospel and will speak his words at his bidding in any given place and situation. But as the scripture says: ‘we do not wrestle against flesh and blood but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places’, (Eph 6.v12) and this like personally seeking God, is often done in the secret quiet place.
